FAQ

What is Bolivia's second Christmas bonus (segundo aguinaldo)?
It's an additional bonus on top of the regular Christmas aguinaldo, equal to one full monthly salary, paid only when Bolivia's real GDP grows above 4.5%. Created by Supreme Decree 1802 on November 20, 2013. It applies to both public and private sector workers.
How many times has the second aguinaldo been paid?
4 times since its creation: 2013 (GDP 6.8%), 2014 (5.5%), 2015 (4.9%), and 2021 (6.1% post-pandemic rebound). It was not paid in 2016-2020 or 2022-2024 because GDP didn't exceed the 4.5% threshold.
When do they announce if the second aguinaldo will be paid?
The National Statistics Institute (INE) publishes preliminary GDP growth data between September and November. Then the Ministry of Economy evaluates whether the 4.5% threshold was reached, and the government issues a supreme decree confirming or denying payment. In recent years, confirmation has come in November.
Who receives the second aguinaldo in Bolivia?
All public and private sector workers, including temporary and domestic workers. Workers with less than 3 months of tenure receive a proportional amount. Independent and self-employed workers are not eligible for the second aguinaldo.
What is the deadline for paying the second aguinaldo?
Before December 31 of the year it's confirmed. Employers who fail to pay on time face fines and penalties from the Ministry of Labor. Unlike the first aguinaldo (paid by December 20), the second aguinaldo deadline is the last day of the year.
